This photograph was taken by Hans Silvester in 1961, when Hans began a trip to Ireland after reading Heinrich Böll’s "Irish Journal". He meets a poor country where men and women struggle to make ends meet, where some seek to leave and others, resigned, live day by day... What strength in this image taken in the fumes of a pub in Dublin where this frozen moment recounts all the thoughts of this beer drinker, the Irish stout.
Retour De Voyage selected this photograph for the strength it presents and for its full place in the collection of "characters". Hans Silvester, by his patience and the great respect he has for his characters, transmits to us these moments of unique life, showing the singularity of each and their solitude that he allows us to share for an instant.
